Nigeria Moves Toward Defence Self-Reliance With Plan for First Military Jetty in Lagos

Nigeria is taking a significant step toward strengthening its indigenous defence manufacturing capacity as the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria–D7G (DICON-D7G) moves forward with plans to build the country’s first Military Jetty near Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The Chief Executive Officer of DICON-D7G, Mr. Osman Chennar, on Tuesday led members of the corporation’s Board of Directors on an inspection of the proposed project site, describing the initiative as a “strategic game changer” for Nigeria’s defence logistics and local arms production.

The jetty, which is expected to be officially launched in June 2026, is designed to serve as a dedicated maritime logistics facility supporting the importation of components, raw materials and specialised equipment needed for the local manufacturing of military hardware.

Speaking with journalists during the inspection visit, Chennar said the facility would play a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence supply chain while accelerating the country’s push toward military self-reliance.

“This Military Jetty is a strategic enabler. It will significantly enhance our inbound logistics by allowing seamless importation of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) components, raw materials and other essential supplies required for local assembly and full-scale production,” he said.

According to him, the jetty will reduce cargo turnaround time, cut transportation costs and streamline logistics operations for defence manufacturing.

The project site, located close to Tin Can Island Port—one of West Africa’s busiest maritime corridors—is expected to provide direct maritime access for defence-related cargo entering Nigeria.

Officials say the strategic location will allow DICON-D7G to efficiently receive specialised equipment and materials used in the production and assembly of military hardware.

Chennar disclosed that the jetty would support the local production of a wide range of defence systems, including small and medium arms, ammunition, tactical drones, anti-jamming drone systems and armoured vehicles such as 4×4 and 6×6 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.

He also revealed that DICON-D7G has already commenced production of DG103 rifles at its manufacturing facility in Kaduna, with plans to supply the Nigerian Armed Forces and export to other African countries.

“At full capacity, the jetty project will create employment for over 2,000 retired military personnel and about 5,000 skilled civilian workers,” Chennar said.

“Beyond job creation, it will enable us to produce thousands of military-grade weapons and ammunition to sufficiently equip the Armed Forces of Nigeria and also export to friendly African nations.”

Security analysts say the project reflects Nigeria’s growing determination to reduce its dependence on foreign defence suppliers while building a sustainable domestic military industrial base.

For decades, Nigeria has relied heavily on imported weapons systems and equipment, often facing delays, procurement bottlenecks and foreign exchange constraints.

By expanding local production capacity, the government hopes to improve operational readiness for the military while strengthening the country’s defence economy.

A member of the DICON-D7G Board of Directors, Major General Mainasara Abdul Masanawa (Rtd), said the jetty would serve not only as a logistics hub but also as an export gateway for Nigerian-made defence products.

“This project reinforces Nigeria’s position as a regional defence manufacturing hub,” Masanawa said.

“It will deepen cooperation with allied African countries while reducing our reliance on foreign sources for defence equipment.”

He noted that the initiative aligns with the broader objective of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places emphasis on defence industrial self-reliance and national security.

Masanawa added that expanding domestic manufacturing will also reduce the pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves by lowering the country’s dependence on imported military hardware.

“By strengthening local production capacity, we will reduce foreign exchange expenditure on defence imports, build local technical expertise, stimulate technology transfer and enhance national security through sustainable, homegrown solutions,” he said.

Industry observers say the proposed jetty could become a critical component of Nigeria’s emerging defence industrial ecosystem, linking maritime logistics directly with manufacturing facilities across the country.

If successfully completed, the facility is expected to improve the efficiency of defence supply chains while positioning Nigeria as a potential exporter of military equipment within Africa.

With the project scheduled for launch in mid-2026, defence stakeholders say the development could mark the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s effort to build a resilient and self-sustaining defence industry.

The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) has thrown its weight behind the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, praising his leadership style and what it described as historic achievements in expanding electricity to rural Nigeria.

In a world press statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the youth group said its declaration of solidarity followed extensive consultations with Northern elders, youth leaders, and key stakeholders across the region.

According to the Assembly, Aliyu has demonstrated “uncommon commitment, transparency, and a results-driven leadership style” since assuming office. The group noted that he has accelerated the implementation of renewable energy and rural electrification projects nationwide.

The group particularly commended the REA’s reported expansion of electricity access to underserved communities. It highlighted that several projects under the current leadership have extended beyond rural households to critical public institutions such as hospitals, universities, and other essential facilities.

These interventions, the Assembly stated, have directly contributed to improved healthcare delivery, enhanced educational outcomes, and increased economic productivity in previously dark communities.

Arewa Youth Groups Applaud INEC’s 2027 Election Reschedule, Calls for National Cohesion

A coalition of 21 Northern Nigeria youth organisations under the aegis of the Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adjusting the timetable for the 2027 General Elections from February to January 2027.

In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by its President, Amb. Abdul Garba Danbature, the group described the decision as a “statesmanlike gesture” that strengthens democratic inclusion and national cohesion.

The youths said the adjustment, reportedly made in consideration of the proximity of the earlier February date to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, demonstrates administrative foresight and sensitivity to Nigeria’s religious diversity.

According to the statement, the initial schedule could have posed logistical and participatory challenges for Muslim faithful observing the fasting period. “By revising the timetable, INEC has shown commitment to inclusivity and ensured that no segment of the population is inadvertently disadvantaged in exercising its constitutional rights,” the group stated.

The coalition noted that the decision followed appeals by several stakeholders, including the Sultan of Sokoto and the leadership of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, as well as civic organisations across the country. The youths also referenced the legacy of the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello, noting his commitment to unity and cross-cultural engagement across religious and ethnic lines.

They stressed that peaceful coexistence and dialogue remain essential pillars for Nigeria’s democratic consolidation, urging stakeholders — including political parties, civil society organisations, religious institutions and youth groups — to focus on issue-based campaigns and lawful mobilisation ahead of the polls.

“The adjustment of the 2027 election timetable is not a concession to sectional interests but a reinforcement of national equity,” the statement added.

The coalition reaffirmed its confidence in INEC’s leadership and called on Nigerians to prepare for what it described as a peaceful, inclusive and credible electoral process.

“Reform Police or Fail the People”: Kaduna Stakeholders Demand Action on Insecurity and Accountability

Stakeholders in Kaduna State have called for measurable police reforms, stronger accountability mechanisms and full compliance with criminal justice standards as part of efforts to address growing insecurity in the state.

The call was made during a two-day Citizens’ Engagement on Community Policing Practice and Reform Agenda organised by the CLEEN Foundation in Kaduna.

Rebuilding Trust Between Citizens and Police

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Peter Maduoma, said effective policing cannot succeed without rebuilding trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

Maduoma who spoke through the Senior Program Officer at the Foundation, Bernard Ekoboy, noted that although the Police Act 2020 provides a framework for reform, security realities in states such as Kaduna remain complex, with persistent cases of banditry, communal clashes, farmer–herder tensions and urban crime.

According to him, weak communication channels and ineffective feedback mechanisms have deepened mistrust between communities and the police.

“Our goal is to move beyond complaints to actionable solutions,” Maduoma said, adding that the forum was structured to generate a Charter of Demands outlining expectations for police professionalism and defining community oversight responsibilities.

He urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to view citizens’ feedback as constructive input for institutional improvement, while encouraging civil society groups to promote responsible engagement and discourage the spread of misinformation.

Human Rights and Justice Standards

In his remarks, Dr Terngu Gwar, Kaduna State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission and Chairman of the Kaduna Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) State Level Working Group, emphasised that security and human rights must be mutually reinforcing.

He stressed the importance of implementing the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, noting that it sets standards for lawful arrests, detention procedures, bail conditions, access to legal representation and protection of vulnerable persons.

Gwar said adherence to these safeguards would strengthen public confidence in the justice system, while violations such as unlawful detention and torture undermine legitimacy and cooperation.

He also acknowledged operational challenges facing the police, including personnel shortages, funding constraints, welfare concerns and increasingly sophisticated criminal networks.

Police Commit to Joint Effort

Receiving the charter of demand on Police-Community Relations on behalf of the Kaduna State Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration and Finance, Abdulkadir Yahaya, described policing as a joint effort.

He urged the community to see the police as one of them and help them to make society safer by providing them with authentic information.

Chairman of the Police-Community Relations Committee in the State, Sanusi Muhammed, called for regular community dialogue to strengthen the existing relationship with the Police.

He was particularly concerned that inadequate information from the police to the members of the society hinders community policing.

“A situation whereby an arrested criminal suspect finds his way back into the society without information on why that happened further pitch the Police against the people,” he said.

Call for Funding, Intelligence and Capacity Building

Earlier, Chairperson of the Federation of Women Lawyers, Barrister Funke Bamikole, harped on improved funding, intelligence gathering and regular capacity building for men and officers of the Nigerian Police.

Priority Areas for Reform

Participants at the engagement which include representatives of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Bar Association, Federation of Women Lawyers, Media, Civil Society among others identified restoring public trust, strengthening accountability systems and deepening civic responsibility as priority areas for reform.

Lent: A Time for Renewal and Reconciliation, Says Archbishop Ndagoso

The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, has called on Christians to embrace prayer, fasting and almsgiving as essential pillars of the 2026 Lenten season, describing the period as a sacred journey of renewal and reconciliation.

In his Lenten message, the Archbishop said the 40-day penitential season focuses on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which he described as the heart of the Christian faith.

He recalled that Lent is a special time of grace during which believers are invited to return to God wholeheartedly and renew their relationship with Him and with one another.

Quoting Pope Benedict XVI, he noted that Lent represents a journey with Christ to Jerusalem, the place of the fulfilment of His passion, death and resurrection, and reminds Christians that their faith is a “way” centred on encountering and following Christ.

Archbishop Ndagoso stressed that the Church traditionally marks the Lenten journey with prayer, fasting and almsgiving, explaining that fasting is not limited to abstinence from food but extends to self-denial, modest living and abstaining from evil.

He said genuine fasting must be accompanied by nourishment from the Word of God and expressed in acts of charity.

According to him, the season provides an opportunity for sober reflection, self-examination and mending broken relationships with God and neighbour.

“The forty days and nights of Lent are meant to draw us closer to God, our neighbour and even ourselves. Christians are called to show care and concern for others through concrete acts of love”.

The Archbishop explained that fasting and almsgiving help bridge the gap between the privileged and the less privileged, reminding the faithful that blessings received from God come with responsibility.

Citing the Gospel of Luke, he said to whom much is given, much is expected, noting that Christians are stewards of God’s gifts and not absolute owners.

He further emphasised that acts of charity must be motivated by genuine love rather than the size of the gift, referencing the teaching of St. Paul that generosity without love profits nothing.

Archbishop Ndagoso encouraged the faithful not to slacken in doing good throughout the season, urging them to eliminate evil habits and grow in mercy and compassion.

Drawing from the words of the prophet Isaiah, he reminded Christians that true fasting includes sharing bread with the hungry, sheltering the homeless and clothing the naked.

He expressed appreciation to the faithful for their continued support to the Church and prayed for a spiritually fruitful Lenten season for all.

The Archbishop wished Christians a grace-filled journey as they prepare for Easter, the celebration of Christ’s victory over sin and death.

Kaduna Christian Group Hails Governor Uba Sani for Reinstating Pilgrimage, Criticises El-Rufai

A faith-based advocacy group, the Christian Forum for Peaceful and United Kaduna, has commended Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for reinstating the Christian pilgrimage scheme in the state, describing the move as bold, inclusive and a step toward rebuilding trust between government and the Christian community.

The group, in a statement issued in Kaduna, applauded the governor for approving the 2025 Christian pilgrimage and facilitating an orientation programme for 50 intending pilgrims held on February 17, 2026.

In the statement signed by the Secretary, Reverend Ishaya Bulus, the group said, “The development marks the return of the programme after it was suspended in 2015 by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, whose administration also scrapped the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Agency.

According to the forum, the reinstatement signals a renewed commitment to fairness and religious harmony in the state.

“We commend Governor Uba Sani for taking a courageous and just decision to reinstate the Christian pilgrimage scheme. This is a testament to inclusivity, equity and a genuine desire to strengthen unity among the diverse religious communities in Kaduna State,” the statement read.

The group recalled that it had strongly criticised the suspension of the scheme under the previous administration, arguing that it denied Christians in the state the opportunity to undertake pilgrimage to the Holy Land and offer prayers for peace and progress in Nigeria.

It noted that the return of the programme represents what it described as a departure from an atmosphere it perceived as unfavourable to Christians during the last administration.

“Today, a milestone has been achieved. The return of the pilgrimage programme demonstrates that government policies can be reviewed in the interest of justice and unity. It restores confidence among Christian faithful who felt marginalised,” the forum added.

“We are happy that Governor Sani’s administration has framed the reinstatement as part of broader efforts to promote religious harmony, inclusiveness and fairness in governance. We are also glad that the government has also emphasised the need to rebuild relationships with faith-based organisations across the state.”

However, the Christian Forum further linked the development to what it described as improved security in Southern Kaduna, noting that the relative calm being experienced in recent months stands in contrast to the insecurity and tensions witnessed in previous years.

The group which condemned the decision of the former Governor, Mal Nasir Elrufai to suspend the pilgrimage scheme, urged the Governor Uba Sani to sustain policies that promote peace, equity and mutual respect among Kaduna’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.

“Elrufai marginalized Christians in Kaduna and planted seed of discord and hatred amongst the two main religions. But we thank God, Uba Sani has uprooted all those trees that hitherto created the cracks.

“Kaduna State, known for its complex religious and ethnic composition, has in the past grappled with sectarian tensions, it against this background that we say initiatives aimed at fostering inclusion and interfaith cooperation remain critical to consolidating peace and stability in the state.” It stated.
